Privacy Policy for AI Reading List Chrome Extension

Thank you for using AI Reading List ("the Extension"). This privacy policy explains how your data is handled when you use the Extension. We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your data transparently.

1. What Data We Collect and Why

The sole purpose of the Extension is to allow you to save web articles for later reading and view AI-generated summaries of their content. To achieve this, the Extension handles the following data:

• URL and Title of Saved Articles: When you click the "Save Current Page" button, the Extension reads the URL and title of your currently active browser tab using the Chrome Tabs API (`chrome.tabs`). This information is necessary to identify the article you wish to save.
• Article Content (Temporary Processing): To generate a summary, the URL of the saved article is securely sent via HTTPS to our backend service, hosted on Google Cloud Run. Our backend service then fetches the main text content of the article from that URL. This text content is processed temporarily solely for summarization.

2. How Data is Used and Processed

• Summary Generation: The temporarily fetched article text is sent to the Google Gemini API to generate a concise, 3-bullet-point summary.
• Backend Processing: Our backend service (URL: `https://ai-reading-list-backend-537733942151.europe-west2.run.app/summarize`) only processes the URL to fetch content and interacts with the Gemini API. **The backend service does not store or log the URLs you send or the article content it scrapes after the summary is generated and returned.**

3. Data Storage

• Local Storage Only: Your list of saved articles (including their URLs, titles, and the generated summaries) is stored **only** on your local computer using Chrome's secure storage API (`chrome.storage.local`). This data is **not** transmitted to or stored on our servers or any third-party servers (other than the temporary processing described above). Your reading list remains private to you and your browser profile.

4. Third-Party Services

• Google Cloud Run: Hosts our backend service for processing summaries.
• Google Gemini API: Used to generate article summaries. Your use of this feature is also subject to Google's AI policies.

We do not sell or transfer your data (the URLs you save) to any other third parties.

5. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect the information transmitted to our backend (HTTPS) and rely on the security of Chrome's local storage for your saved list. However, no internet transmission or electronic storage is 100% secure.

6. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy within the Extension or its store listing.
